Barkingside residents are expected to attend the formal naming ceremony of their new town square today.

The all-day event, starting at 10am, will see the Mayor of Redbridge Cllr Ashley Kissin officially open the square at 3pm.

Hundreds of colourful lanterns will illuminate the sky at 5pm at the event which is being held to celebrate the regeneration of Barkingside.

The celebrations will also include the announcement of the square’s new name following a competition which asked residents to come up with name suggestions for the site.

Performances from rock group The Novelty and Redbridge Music Lounge and a variety of food and drink will also be on offer during the day which is being themed around an adaptation of Little Red Riding Hood.

The improvements to the area have been made under the Better Barkingside scheme.
