Labour reshuffles ward candidates ahead of next year's local elections

PUBLISHED: 13:19 15 May 2013 | UPDATED: 13:19 15 May 2013

The Labour candidates standing in five wards in next year's local elections have been decided, with one deciding to resign from the party and stand as an Independent.

Aldborough, Chadwell, Goodmayes, Valentines and Clayhall candidates have all been chosen and elections to decide nominees in 10 further wards will be held over the coming week.

Changes include deputy leader Cllr Wes Streeting standing in Aldborough instead of his current Chadwell ward, and Cllr Aziz Choudhury, of Valentines ward, moving to Chadwell.

On Monday, Cllr Andy Walker of the Chadwell ward, resigned from Labour and is planning on standing as an independent candidate in the 2014 election.

He said he had been ‘forced’ to resign because of a letter he wrote to the Recorder opposing the closure of the A&E at King George Hospital, Barley Lane, Goodmayes.

Leader of the Redbridge Labour Group Cllr Jas Athwal said this was a misrepresentation of what had happened.

Cllr Athwal said: “I could not disagree with this any more. The selection panel and independent review panel ran independently and there was a whole series of criteria he did not meet.”
