A controversial restaurant backed by Premiership footballers has been granted a licence after agreeing to shorten its opening hours.

Spanish chain La Sala – whose Marbella branch has featured on The Only Way Is Essex – had hoped to open its first UK restaurant at the former Deuces nightclub in Chigwell Road in Woodford Bridge.

Last night Redbridge Council’s licensing sub-committee agreed to give the restaurant the go-ahead – but only with a licence running until 11.30pm on weeknights, midnight on Fridays and Saturdays and 10.30pm on Sundays.

The restaurant has also been allowed a special licence for Christmas Eve, Boxing Day and New Year’s Eve, licenced until 1am and closing at 1.30am.

Its external roof terrace will also have to close at 9pm, with the number of people allowed at any time limited to eight.
