Nearly one hundred women from Redbridge’s Indian community came together to mark the 68th anniversary of their motherland’s Constitution.
The Gants Hill branch of the Women’s Interfaith Network held a lunch in celebration of Indian Republic Day at Kanchan Restaurant, in Perth Road, on Wednesday.
Ninety-two members of the group attended to sing patriotic songs and eat a hot vegetarian meal.
Some group members performed a short-skit about Jhansi Ki Rani, the historic queen of northern Indian state now known as Uttar Pradesh.
Dr Sudarshan Kapur, who has chaired the group for nine years, lead the event organisation.
The 78-year-old South Woodford resident said: “The event went very successfully.”
The event was attended by Redbridge Mayor Cllr Linda Huggett.
The women’s network brings together women from all walks of life from different ethnic, religious and non-religious backgrounds.
They intend to hold an event in conjunction with International Women’s Day on March 8.
