Ilford secondary school wins ‘outstanding progress’ award

A school has received an award for helping their pupils to achieve GCSE results beyond their expectations.

Ilford County High School, of Fremantle Road, Barkingside, was awarded an Outstanding Progress prize at the SSAT Educational Outcomes Awards, for being in the top 20 per cent of schools nationally for “value added”.

Value added is a measure used to show how much progress pupils have made from the beginning to the end of their secondary education.

It is calculated by comparing pupils’ best eight GCSE results and the middle performance of other pupils with the same or similar results at Key Stage Two and Three.

Ilford County’s head teacher, Mike Capon, attended a regional ceremony in Cambridge with representatives from other schools.

He said: “I was very pleased. It is recognition for the achievements of the boys and staff.

“The award is to do with the progress they have made since joining the school in Year Seven through to their GCSEs.

“We have high-achieving boys already, so for them to perform beyond expectations and for us to get an award is worthy of celebration.

“It is hard to progress when at a high point already. We expected to get outstanding GCSE results because we have able boys, but to have that recognition nationally was a great reward.”

Sue Williamson is the chief executive of SSAT, which is the national schools’ membership organisation for improvement and collaboration.

She said: “These schools should be congratulated for their exceptional achievement.

“They have proved themselves to be leading the field in improving GCSE outcomes for their students.

“These results are testament to the commitment and hard work of the students, teachers and leadership teams and show what can be achieved when skilled teachers have high expectations and ambition for every young person.

“I am proud that these schools are members of the SSAT network.”
