Ilford fossil-hunter finds 65-million-year-old extinct animal

A fossil-hunter has made her second discovery after finding a 65-million-year-old extinct marine mollusc.

Hannah Chowdhry, 10, of Gordon Road, Ilford, discovered the inoceramus’ bivalve fossil when she was sifting through gravel taken from the Brett Lafarge quarry in Hainault Road, Romford, for the East Ilford Betterment Partnership’s Ilford mammoth project.
The fossil, enclosed in flint, is a rare find.
The discovery is Hannah’s second. She found a 125-million-year-old filosina gregaria fossil on the Isle of Wight last year.
Hannah said: “I feel very proud of myself for finding this second fossil. It was covered in muck but the strange lines stood out for me. I immediately washed the fossil and suddenly noticed how bright and colourful the stone was – it looked so beautiful.”
