The bold floral trail that has adorned Ilford town centre this summer is due to be dismantled today.

Each of this year’s objects – a shoe, a cup and saucer, a handbag, a perfume bottle and a suit jacket – represent items that can be bought within the town.

The Ilford Business Improvement District (BID) team, who installed the trail hailed it a sweet-smelling success and said they would be back ‘bigger and better’ next year.

“It’s something different,” said Ben Collins, BID manager. “It’s been a talking point we can use to encourage people to navigate their way around the area. In general it’s been really well received.”

Since the trail launched in June 700 people have scanned the QR codes on the base of the displays to try and be one of five winners of a £100 prize draw which will be announced in the next two weeks.

The flowers have been such a success with residents that they were left up longer than planned.

While flowers in Ilford have been displayed by the BID for five years, this is the first year that they have been set out in such a creative manner.

The positive reaction has led BID to expand the number of floral designs next year.

“Everyone was really respectful of them,” added Mr Collins. “The feedback has been fantastic. We hope to see them next year, bigger and better than ever”

Local businesses contribute to a BID funding pot and then decide what to spend it on. Other projects include the Christmas lights and enhanced cleaning of the town centre.
