Ilford children and residents share ideas for new sports area in South Park

Schoolchildren and residents have had their say in plans for a community sports area in an Ilford park.

The South Park Users Group is raising money to improve the sports court.

Children at Isaac Newton Academy, in Cricklefield Place, Ilford, filled out surveys saying what they wanted.

Users group secretary Tony Hoad said football, netball, basketball and cricket were popular.

He added: “They also had ideas on making the area safe and how to encourage other children to use it.”

Pupils who had put the most effort into their plans for the park, in South Park Drive, were given certificates at a presentation last week.

Residents in homes bordering the park also filled in surveys and Mr Hoad said they were “very positive”. He believes upgrading the sports facilities will cost about £30,000.

Redbridge Council’s area committee six granted £195 towards a planning application for the project last month and Mr Hoad is now applying for other grants, including Olympic legacy funding.

The sports area will be free to use.
