Champion of the community and Kenneth More Theatre stalwart Barbara Hills has died at her home at the age of 84 after a short illness.

Barbara ran the Oakfield Road, Ilford venue’s theatre club and appeared in many productions, as well as hosting the annual Kenny awards.

She was also a tireless supporter of charities and was heavily involved in promoting and preserving the Ilford Hospital Chapel, the town’s oldest building.

Former KMT general manager Vivyan Ellacott said today it was hard to imagine the theatre without Barbara.

He said: “She was one of those people who are truly irreplaceable, and will be deeply mourned by legions of friends at the Kenneth More Theatre, St Mary’s Church, the Ilford Hospital Chapel and the many other organisations which she fostered and supported through many decades.

Vivyan added: “The sense of personal loss is very great, but I know it is shared by many, very many, others, whose lives have been enriched by this remarkable woman.”
