Plans that will see athletes from all over the world come to Redbridge to train for the Olympics have been given a final seal of approval.

Redbridge Cycling Centre in Forest Road, Hainault, will be turned into a training ground for Olympic riders during next year’s games.

The panel at Redbridge regulatory committee meeting approved the final plans for fencing to surround the grounds last month, which committee chairman Cllr Richard Hoskins described as “the icing on the cake”.

“This is something very positive, because not only can Redbridge benefit from visitors coming to see the Games, we’ll also be welcoming athletes. “The cycling centre is mainly used by the public on evenings and weekends, which is perfect for the plans as the athletes will be using it in the day-time. It’s a win-win situation,” he added.

Councillors on the panel voted unanimously in favour of the temporary measures which will be put in place.

The plans include four portable buildings, which will be used as changing areas, and a temporary track, as well as a enlargement of the car park for the period only.

Two objections were received from Redbridge residents on the grounds that users would be restricted from the cycling centre during training.

Aldborough Hatch Defence Association chairman Ron Jeffries said: “It’s brilliant. Anything that puts a spotlight on Redbridge and Aldborough is a great, positive thing.”

The centre was built in August 2008 for the use of the community, as well as during the Games.

It replaced the Eastway Cycle Circuit, which is now being turned into the VeloPark, the venue in which the Olympic and Paralympic Games will be held.
