Archant

From canoeing to windsurfing, hundreds of people dived in at the deep end in Fairlop Waters to celebrate the one year anniversary of its revamped boat house.

Around 500 people from across Redbridge gathered at an open day in the borough’s biggest country park, in Forest Road, Barkingside on April 28.

Wet weather didn’t dampen the guest’s spirits however, according to Fairlop Waters’ duty manager Danielle, employed by Vision Redbridge.

“It was really good,” she said, adding: “It was a taster of things to do and it attracted a lot of people.”

She added: “It was a shame the weather couldn’t have been better.

“But a lot of families came - they enjoyed the whole day.”

Guests were spoiled by the wide range of activities on offer, being able to try their hands at water sports, obstacle courses as well as a talent show.

Within the country park’s thirty-eight-acre sailing lake, guests took part in rowing, as well as canoeing and windsurfing.

Team-building took place on the high ropes, as guests learned to co-operate with each other while navigating a precarious path through the course.

And after burning all those calories, they indulged in a barbecue which was well-stocked with cheese burgers and a hotdog machine.

A beer tent included a selection of ciders - Kopparberg, Aspall, High and Dry and more.

Danielle added: “We had a live DJ play all the way until midnight.”

A talent show was held during the day, the winner of which is set to perform at the Fairlop Fair on June 7.

The festival, which will also take place in the country park, will include sweets stalls and a performance from Redbridge Music Lounge.

Fairlop Waters’ boat house has been standing for at least 20 years, according to Danielle.

Last year, a massive refurbishment saw the overhaul of its bar and kitchen and the installation of new seating and patio areas.

Throughout the year the boat house offers live music, quiz nights, karaoke, a pool table and is also used for weddings and functions.
