Rush-hour commuters should expect delays in High Road, Goodmayes, which has been closed in both directions at the Barley Lane junction while firefighters deal with the blaze.

Crews from Ilford were first called at about 5am and left the scene before returning following another call from police.

There are no injuries, a firefighter said.

A passer-by Emma Peak, 20, managed to film the van bursting into flames.

“We were driving up to the traffic lights, and everyone was turning around,” she said.

“Police and fire engines turned up not long after we saw it, there was smoke everywhere. We turned around to go round another way and then flares came out of the back of the lorry, not sure what was in there.”
