A man has died following a “serious collision” in the A12 this morning.

Police were called at around 6am by the London Ambulance Service to the A12 at the junction of Ellesmere Gardens, after a collision between a car and male pedestrian.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene at 6.40am.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman confirmed the driver stopped at the scene and there have been no arrests made.

The news comes as a Recorder investigation has found that stretch of Eastern Avenue is notorious for motorcyclist races, where daredevils risk other people’s lives trying to beat the speed cameras.

The fastest speed clocked in London in the last year was taken just past Gants Hill roundabout, with the driver travelling at 137mph – more than three times the speed limit.

The A12 is now open again, after being closed for several hours due to the accident.

There are still likely to be residual huge delays between Redbridge roundabout and Gants Hill.
