The bank’s branch in High Street, Wanstead, is to close in April.

A spokesman for the bank confirmed the news today: “We never take the decision to close a branch lightly, and we understand it’s unsettling for the local community.

“Unfortunately, with an increase in the use of online and telephone banking over the past few years use of the Wanstead branch has fallen significantly, and we’ve taken the difficult decision to close it.

The news comes shortly after the much-loved butchers shut its doors last week.

Scott Wilding of the Wanstead Society told the Recorder: “It is very sad that HSBC is closing, personally I have used the bank since it was called Midland – for more than 20 years.

“It shows the way banking is going, with more people using online.

“I think the people who will suffer the most are the older customers who are not as used to online banking.”

The branch’s last day is scheduled to be April 15.

The spokesman added: “We will be working with customers who use the branch to help them understand their options, which include being able to use local post offices for their day-to-day banking. There are also free ATMs in the area.”
