A community centre is celebrating after one of its members made the New Year’s Honours list.

Holocaust survivor Ivor Perl, 83, of Redbridge Jewish Community Centre, Woodford Bridge Road, Redbridge, is to receive a British Empire Medal (BEM) for services to Holocaust education and awareness.

Ivor along with nine other Holocaust survivors receiving awards attended a tea at Jewish Care’s Holocaust Survivors’ Centre (HSC) in Hendon to celebrate their achievement together.

Ivor said: “As a recipient of an honour, I think I can speak for most of us when I say that when I give talks I feel all the victims are there behind me looking over my shoulder and as such I accept this honour on their behalf as well.”

Aviva Trup, manager of the HSC, said: “I’d like to congratulate our members who have received New Year’s Honours from the Queen.

“The Honours recognise the commitment to Holocaust education and awareness, which the survivors have shown by tirelessly sharing their experiences from the Holocaust.”
