The Hindu festival of Rakhi was celebrated around the borough and a special thread bracelet was presented to the Mayor of Redbridge.

The Ilford branch of the Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh (HSS) celebrated the bond between brothers and sisters at Redbridge Town Hall, High Road, Ilford on Friday.

The tradition, which has been practised for centuries, is always marked by tying rakhis to loved ones to mark the eternal bond between them.

Annually HSS tie rakhis to various civic and community leaders as well as those providing a service to society, and this year the Mayor of Redbridge Cllr Muhammed Javed was presented with a bracelet.

Dheeraj Agnihotri, youth coordinator of the cultural organisation Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh, said: “We’ve made it for the wider community celebrating the good work they are doing and bringing awareness of the culture and faith as well.”
