High-energy musical comedy Hot Mikado to open at Kenneth More Theatre

A theatre company will be performing a classic tale of forbidden love set in Japan in the 1940s.

Havering Music Makers will be performing Hot Mikado at the Kenneth More Theatre, Ilford next month.

Hot Mikado which is based on Gilbert & Sullivan’s The Mikado, transforms favourites such as Three Little Maids.

Helen Pree, who is playing Peep-Bo in the musical, told the Recorder: “It’s a rather bizarre story.

“It was originally done by Gilbert and Sullivan and this adaption brings it more up to sate in terms of musical numbers.

“Gilbert and Sullivan fans will recognise the songs. The lyrics are practically the same but not in the Gilbert and Sullivan style, they are more up tempo.”

Sue Howlett, chairman of Havering Music Makers said: “We had a great time performing the original version of Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Mikado in 2013, but this version of Hot Mikado is fantastic fun.

“It’s energetic, exciting and, above all, very entertaining.”

Helen played the same character in a production of Hot Mikado with the Havering Music makers in 2013.

She added: “It’s a very different show to be in. This time my character Peep Bo is rather an odd character.

“I like playing eccentric characters, who are a bit over the top.

“Doing this role, I can really let my hair down.”

Hot Mikado will be playing at Kenneth More Theatre from February 22 - 24, at 7.30pm with a matinee at 3pm on Saturday, February 24.

Tickets are £16 for adults, £15 concessions, and £13 for Kenneth More Theatre Club Members.
