An interactive music event aimed at improving the skills and living environment for people with dementia took place on Thursday.
Alli Anthony of the Alzheimer’s Society said: “Even when many memories are hard to retrieve, music can sometimes still be recalled - if only for a short while. The event was a great success, we had more than 40 people from across the borough attend. It was held in partnership with Living Well Resource Centre and Redbridge Council for Voluntary Services.
The interactive workshop demonstrated how music can help to extend skills and create an environment where people with dementia can express positive feelings and emotions.
It was held at the Mildmay Community Centre, in Mildmay Road, Ilford and included music performances inspired by a variety of different cultures, singing accompanied by percussion and movement and interactive workshops for volunteers, activity co-ordinators, faith and community leaders and carers of people living with dementia.
More than 2,554 people in Redbridge live with the condition and according to the Alzheimer’s Society, this number is likely to rise. They also believe there is low awareness of dementia amongst the black, Asian and minority ethnic communities, many of whom are not accessing the information, advice and support they need.
