Births at King George Hospital could be stopped from March 19 if plans to transfer maternity services to Queen’s Hospital are approved on Thursday.

The board of NHS North East London and the City will make the final decision whether to stop all births at the Goodmayes hospital, in Barley Lane, and transfer mothers to other hospitals.

The meeting was originally scheduled for March 27 but was moved forward last month.

A report by NELC said: “The review team found that BHRUT system was now sufficiently ready to make the change and that, on the balance of risk, it would be better to make the change as soon as possible rather than waiting until April.”

It added: “The board will consider a provisional timeframe for changes to take place from 19 March 2013.”

Queen’s Hospital, in Romford, has recently expanded its maternity services with a new birth centre.

The Care Quality Commission found vast improvements had been made to the troubled department at Queen’s in a December inspection.

If the move is approved, women will give birth at the Romford hospital, leaving antenatal clinics, scans and parenting education at King George.
