Healthcare campaigners battling to keep A&E and maternity services at King George Hospital are holding a public meeting on Sunday.
Health Secretary Andrew Lansley recently approved plans to shift the services from the hospital in Barley Lane, Goodmayes, to Queen’s Hospital, Romford.
Labour councillor Andy Walker believes the decision could still be reversed and has organised a “Say No” to closures meeting at St John’s Church in St Johns Road, Seven Kings.
He will be joined by speakers Bob Archer, president of Redbridge National Union of Teachers, and Rev Jonathan Evens, vicar of St John’s Church.
Writing on Mr Walker’s blog, Mr Archer said: “We should redouble our efforts to save A&E and maternity services at King George and to make sure that all our hospitals are adequately resourced.”
An independent panel found in October that running A&E and maternity services at all six hospitals in north east London was not sustainable and proposed the development of a major acute hospital at Queen’s.
The public meeting begins at 12.15pm.
