This McDonald’s meal could soon be on display at the prestigious National Gallery.

But all is not as it seems - the food is modelled from paper, card and felt, and would not go down at all well.

Children from a Woodford Green school created the “meal” as part of the unusual “Take One Picture” art project run by the National Gallery.

After being taken to the gallery in Central London to see a painting by 17th century artist Willem Kalf, featuring a red lobster alongside a lemon and a drinking horn, the pupils at Avon House Preparatory School, in High Road, created their own work inspired by it.

To start, a fishmonger visited the school to teach children how to fillet a fish.

They even got to handle a real lobster.

Younger children learnt songs about life under the sea and older children recreated the painting with models of goblets and meals.

Some worked with a silversmith to design unique jewellery.

Selected pieces by the children could go on display at the gallery later this year.

Headteacher Amanda Campbell said: “This is the fourth year we have joined in the national project and we were delighted when the National Gallery contacted the school to say they would exhibit some of our work.

“This is a great achievement and all the school is very excited.”
