A young woman who rushed to the aid of victims of the Grenfell fire tragedy said she knew she “had to do something” to help those affected by the blaze.

Former Valentines High School student Swarzy Macaly, 24, from Ilford, has been nominated for the Young Citizen Award for her selfless and inspirational actions during a situation which caused widespread panic.

Swarzy co-ordinated efforts to sort out donations for victims and her messages of support went viral - providing hope and encouragement to all those affected.

“As soon as I saw the burning building, I knew I had to get myself down to west London,” she said. “I think we all gravitate to the truth that it is important to be devoted to one another in love whilst faced with a great tragedy.”

“After seeing people come together to pack boxes, drive vans, hug the broken-hearted, cook for strangers, and challenge authorities, I’m confident and convinced that all is done in name of love with the victims of this unjust disaster in mind.

“And yet, there is also another side to love that I believe hates what is evil and clings to what is good.

“We are also working together to ensure justice is served; there must be accountability for such injustice because this should never have happened in London in 2017.”

Swarzy said she was “humbled” to be nominated for the award as she wasn’t expecting it, she simply did what she felt she had to to support those in need.
