A blaze the size of a football pitch broke out in Goodmayes this morning.

Firefighters were called to Barley Lane at 10.24am to find one square hectare of grass and rubbish burning in a wasteland, behind a block of flats.

Three engines and 15 firefighters got the blaze under control, and no one was hurt.

The cause of the fire is currently unknown.

A spokesman for the London Fire Brigade urged people to be careful when discarding lit cigarettes in the hot weather.
