The owner of a garden centre is celebrating a century of prime petunias and ravishing roses being sold in Goodmayes.

Mark Sherwood, from Dagenham, owner of Webb’s Garden Centre, Green Lane, said it felt “brilliant” to be a part of the business’ long history after it turned 100-years-old this week.

Mark, who started working at Webb’s in 1997, said it was founded by Alf Webb and was run by his family until 1973, before a series of different owners ran the centre.

Mark who bought the business in 2012 is hoping to keep it within his family, in honour of its original owners, and hopes to pass it on to his 20-year-old son Ryan.

He said: “I had worked here for so long at the time it went up for sale and I thought it would be a shame if someone else took it over – so I bought it.”

He added: “It’s a landmark around here and I hope we can keep it going as strong as we can for many more years.”
