Several motorists may have filled their cars with diesel contaminated with water after a fuel mix-up at a Goodmayes petrol station.

Chadwell Heath resident Bushra Ali said her S Series BMW broke down only four yards away from the Tesco petrol station, in High Road, after she filled up her tank on Sunday (September 23) at around 7.30pm.

“Another car came after me and broke down as well,” said the 34-year-old.

She said she immediately approached staff to inform them something was wrong but was initially met with inaction.

“I had to go out and shout out to people to ‘stop filling your cars!’ as they were breaking down,” she added.

Imran Fayaz, a driver with private hire company Addison Lee, had his company car break down after he filled it with petrol at the same station at 7.30pm on Sunday.

Imran paid for a technician to drain his petrol tank, costing £144.

His receipt indicted the tank was “contaminated with a water substance”.

A Tesco spokesman said: “Our investigation has found an isolated case of water in one of the diesel storage tanks at our Goodmayes Extra petrol station and we are in contact with and supporting affected customers.

“We apologise for any inconvenience caused while this storage tank remains closed.”
