A Gants Hill man was jailed for six weeks on Thursday for attempting to steal meat from a petrol station.

Ahmed Khan of Eastern Avenue was caught putting two packs of meat worth 20 under his jacket at BP Connect, in the same road, on October 13 at 11am.

He ran off but was detained, brought back to the store and arrested by police.

Redbridge Magistrates’ Court heard how the 40-year-old intended to sell the meat in order to buy alcohol.

He pleaded guilty and was told he would be put in custody due to a “huge amount” of previous convictions for theft.
