Four people are recovering in hospital after escaping a blaze in a flat above a Gants Hill Shop.

The injured are thought to have leapt to safety after flames swept through the building in Woodford Avenue, Gants Hill, at 10.15pm yesterday.

Thirty firefighters from six fire enginesfought to control the fire, which was not under control until 12.45am today.

Watch Manager Mark Mills said: “The fire was already fully developed when we arrived at the scene. Our crews worked incredibly hard to prevent the fire from spreading to neighbouring flats. Had it not been for their efforts, this fire would undoubtedly have caused much greater damage.”
