Gearies Primary School unveiled the Mitchell Library yesterday, which is its first dedicated space for reading.

The room is named in memory of Robert Mitchell, who gave the school £25,000 in his will as he had attended decades before.

Mr Mitchell died in 2013 and his three daughters represented the family at the opening, in Waremead Road, Gants Hill.

Bob Drew, the school’s headteacher, said: “It is absolutely great, we are really pleased.

“Mr Mitchell wanted to give something back to the school and that was a lovely sentiment from him.

“The library will have a significant impact.”

Youngsters have been trained up to help run the facility. They will make sure it is tidy, promote it and suggest ideas for new books.
