One hundred years on from the beginning of the First World War, Redbridge held a number of commemorative events over the weekend to remember our soldiers.

On Sunday, a parade and service of remembrance took place at the steps of Redbridge Town Hall, in High Road, Ilford.

Organised by Redbridge Council and attended by dozens of residents, the event included speakers such as the mayor, Cllr Ashley Kissin, council leader Cllr Jas Athwal, Rabbi Alex Chapper and Father Richard Wyber.

The Last Post was also played.

The Ilford War Memorial Gardens Action Group held their own commemoration on Saturday.

Their open day, at the gardens, featured an exhibition, music performances, a talk by information and heritage librarian Ian Dowling and displays by themselves, the Western Front Association, the Royal British Legion and cadets.

The memorial group’s chairman, Ruth Clark, said the day was a success.

“We had glorious weather and it was very good. The low turnout was disappointing in the view that it was a commemoration of the First World War, but other than that it was lovely.

“I would like to thank the volunteers who had stalls and the singers.”

She added: “It is very dear to my heart the memorial gardens. I think Redbridge has done wonders in commemorating the centenary.”
