Children’s author David Lucas visited Grove Primary School, in Chadwell Heath Lane, Chadwell Heath, to teach pupils how to create a picture book.

David, from Hackney, gave the workshop to children in Key Stage One.

He read one of his books, The Robot and the Bluebird, to the enthralled pupils before helping them with their own ideas.

The children learnt how to build up their stories and develop their characters.

David showed the youngsters how he brought his stories to life with brilliant illustrations.

Grove Primary Year 2 pupil, Keira Misselbrook Haylock, said: “We read a brilliant story about a monster and then created one of our own.”

Zain Khan, also in Year 2, said: “I was excited to write a story about my monster.”

Hannah Leppard, reading leader at Grove Primary, said: “We are thrilled to invite authors in to work with the children of Grove Primary, they are developing a love of reading and a greater enthusiasm for writing stories.”

David regularly teaches at schools and has written a total of 13 children’s books.
