It will be a quiet night at Funky Mojoe tomorrow if the club abides by rules enforced by the High Court.

The South Woodford bar, in High Road, is inviting customers to pay £20 entry and drink their own alcohol after it has to stops serving at 11.30pm.

Clubbers can stay until 3am but they may not have much to dance to as the licensing conditions forbid entertainment.

The playing of recorded music from CDs, computer files or anything else is also prohibited.

A council spokesman said: “A condition on the licence means the premises must close and all patrons must leave by midnight, if licensable activity is carried on.

“There is no such requirement if no licensable activity carries on.”

Clubbers feared the bar was closing for good when it failed to open for two weekends a High Court ruling cut its business hours last month.

It threw out the bar’s appeal, making Funky Mojoe adhere to the new council rules and pay £127,000 legal costs.

Residents have campaigned for five years to slash the bar’s hours due to noise and anti-social behaviour, which culminated in a “street brawl” where drinkers fought with belts and bottles in January last year.

Cllr Richard Hoskins said: “Mojoe’s latest plan is an outrageous attempt to get round the decisions of the courts and council.

“They just want to continue inflicting misery on South Woodford residents.

“The thought that in future their clients will pay £20 to bring their own drinks into a nightclub without music smells of their ultimate desperation.”

A council spokesman said the rules have been made “very clear” to Funky Mojoe and it will be monitored closely.

She added: “We will continue to do everything we can to make sure that they are complying with the law.”

Breaking the licensing conditions can be punished by a fine of up to £20,000 or a six month prison term.

Despite repeated requests, Funky Mojoe did not comment.
