A swear-box denouncing “fracking” as a dirty word will be placed by protesters in Ilford town centre today.
The stunt by Wanstead and Woodofrd Friends of the Earth aims to persuade Redbridge Council to declare the borough a fracking-free zone.
This method of extracting shale gas deposits through hydraulic fracturing has been criticised for its environmental impact.
Diana Korchien, co-coordinator for Wanstead and Woodford Friends of the Earth, said: “The idea was to give fracking a very negative image, like the f-word, by interacting with the public.”
As today is global “frack-down” day, local Friends of the Earth groups across England are campaigning to raise awareness.
Shoppers will be invited to pose for photographs with the large swear-box outside Redbridge Town Hall, High Road, from 11-1pm, where group members will be on hand to discuss the problems with fracking.

Everyone is welcome at meetings on the third Thursday of every month from 7.30-9.30pm at The Nightingale pub, Nightingale Lane, Wanstead.
