The first completely new community centre in Redbridge for “more than 20 years” has opened its doors.

The centre, in Green Lane, is being run by Goodmayes Residents’ Association (GRASS) for local societies, groups and clubs to use.

Residents, councillors, police and representatives from nearby Al-Noor Primary School celebrated at the official opening today.

GRASS chairman Keith Stanbury said the centre had been a “labour of love” for the association for two years.

He added: “At long last we have a community centre where local groups can meet and we can look after not only the elderly, but a whole range of interests.”

Cllr Felicity Banks, the Mayor of Redbridge, unveiled a plaque at the opening ceremony.

She said: “It’s wonderful to see a new community centre opening up and I wish it all the best for the future.”

Goodmayes Community Centre was built with funding from Swan Housing and Redbridge Council.

The building, which is wheelchair friendly, will include a community hall, fully fitted kitchen, toilets and storage space for regular users.

GRASS is keen to hear from any community groups who might want to use the building.
