A celebration of community art featuring work by 150 people returns to the borough this weekend.

The fifth annual Art Trail Wanstead will kick off on Saturday at a variety of venues, including shops, churches and community centres which have transformed into mini galleries.

The 16-day spectacle will not only include a range of visual attractions, but will also provide activities such as workshops and demonstrations.

Trail leader Angela Daley said: “We want to make art accessible to everyone and, more than that, we want people to have a go and enjoy being creative.”

New venues for the free trail include Wanstead underground station, Aldersbrook Baptist Church and the Manor House gastro pub on Wanstead high Street.

Artwork has been created not just by amateur and professional artists, but also by schoolchildren and older people.

Art tutor and 3D artist Anna Bisset was commissioned by Vision Redbridge Culture and Leisure to create mobile artwork.

Her Peace Dove, with a wingspan of about 1.5m, has been created from willow cane and will tour a range of venues - including Wanstead underground station on Saturday.

The borough’s residents can also get their own creative juices flowing.

Art Group Wanstead is encouraging people to take part in the project HomeFront, by displaying their own work in their front gardens or windows.

The optional theme is Make Art Not War.

The founder of the trail, Donna Mizzi, said: “We’ve been told the trail has quickly become one of the area’s defining attractions.

“So many local people say they look forward to it, which is fantastic.”

Highlights will include demonstrations and workshops at the Wanstead House Community Association, from 1-5pm next Saturday, and a fair and life drawing sessions at Wanstead Library’s Churchill Hall, from 11am to 4pm on September 20.
