Free ice cream was handed out to residents on Thursday to mark Fairtrade Fortnight.

The Co-operative’s ice cream van stopped off at its branch in High Street, Wanstead and treated people to samples of its Fairtrade range.

Fairtrade Fortnight is running until March 13 and encourages the purchase of fair and ethically traded goods.

Today year two children from St Aidan’s Catholic Primary School, Benton Road, Ilford made smoothies using Fairtrade products.

The school is running a series of activities to help pupils understand the plight of disadvantaged workers which include banner making and letter writing to companies asking them to make sure their employees are fairly paid.
