Firefighters evacuated around 50 people from a Hainault industrial estate as they battled to put out a flaming gas cylinder at risk of exploding.

Four fire engines and 21 firefighters and officers were called to an industrial estate in Roebuck Road at 8.20am today (April 11).

They found an oxy-aceteylene welding pack, normally used for welding steel, was alight.

A 50m exclusion zone was put in place and people were evacuated from the surrounding area as a precaution because the cylinders can explode when exposed to heat.

Firefighters cooled the cylinder to an ambient temperature and battled for three hours to contain the fire, which was under control by 11.25am.

Crews from Hainault, Romford and Dagenham fire stations attended the scene.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
