Linvoy Primus, the former Charlton and Portsmouth footballer, is to visit the Barking diocese to give a talk, coach children and field questions on his career.
Event organiser Rob Kean, 35, of Woodford, joked the Christian Education Project, which arranged the visit with several Wanstead and Woodford churches, were “getting their money’s worth”.
“I am really excited about Linvoy’s visit,” said Mr Kean. “He is a local boy, born in Forest Gate.
“We are certainly working him hard on the day.”
Primus, who made more than 400 appearances during his professional career, converted to Christianity during his playing days after his wife was invited to church.
On June 25, Primus will be visiting Oakdale Juniors School in Oakdale Road, South Woodford and All Saits’ Church in Inmans Row, Woodford Green.
Mr Kean believes Primus’ visit will “inspire” youngsters in the borough.
He said: “First of all, it builds on what we learnt in 2012 after the Olympics, trying to inspire young people to get into sport, plus it will inspire Christians to follow their faith.”
