Schools across Redbridge have been joining in the World Book Day fun by coming to school in fancy dress and taking part in reading challenges and games.

Pupils at Oakdale Junior School in Oakdale Road, South Woodford, have dressed up as heroes or villains from their favourite stories.

Roald Dahl characters as always have proved popular with Willy Wonka and Fantastic Mr Fox sharing class space with comic book protagonists Batman, Iron Man and The Joker.

At Highlands Primary School in Highlands Gardens, Ilford, youngsters have also enjoyed the opportunity to leave their uniform at home, walking through the school doors in a variety of eye-catching costumes including Robin Hood, King Arthur and Harry Potter.

Performance poet Roger Stevens has been visiting Coppice Primary School in Manford Way, Chigwell, where classes have been swapping books, dressing up and reading throughout the day.

Headteacher Jo Coton said: “It was great to see so many famous characters in the school, and I always enjoy seeing older children and the younger ones reading to each other.

“The school is really encouraging everyone to enjoy reading.”
