Snow White has collapsed on the floor next to a homemade apple pie.
It is not a scenario that you would necessarily expect to see in a primary classroom, but it certainly engaged the pupils who were tasked to investigate it.
Schools from across Redbridge and beyond headed to Forest School, College Place, to participate in a junior competition which hoped to “inspire talented young scientists in a fun and invigorating way”.
Pupils were given three cases to complete which were centred on chemistry, biology and physics.
Judges then awarded first, second and third prizes to the entrants from the 24 schools.
For the biology task, children had to identify characteristics of Reebops- imaginary animals made from marshmallows, pins, pipe cleaners and cocktail sticks.
They then had to work out which animals were related by using their knowledge of recessive and dominant genes.
In the physics room children had to make an electrical circuit to power a torch and were introduced to basic circuits in household items.
For the chemistry element of the competition, pupils has to analysis the poisonous pie which made Snow White pass out.
They had to deduce that potassium cyanide was added to the pastry instead of salt, along with flour, milk and bicarbonate of soda.
“Pupils were tasked with completing an exciting array of experiments, each of which required various conclusions to be made and several specific questions to be answered,” a spokeswoman for the school said.
“Forest pupils and staff were there to help and guide the participants whilst they did their experiments.
“Each team’s work was judged by Forest School staff who awarded the 1st, 2nd and 3rd placed teams -an exciting range of prizes were on offer and all school’s individual team members received a certificate of participation.”
First place was awarded to the Betty Layward School, Clissold Road, Stoke Newington.
Second place was given to Forest School, College Place, Walthamstow.
Third place was won by a Redbridge independent school, Woodford Green prep school, Glengall Road, Woodford Green.
“The children loved taking part and were really engaged with all the activities,” the spokeswoman added.
