Pupils, parents and teachers can be proud that the borough is top of the class when it comes to education.

Figures from the department for education (DfE) show Redbridge beat both national and London benchmarks for this year’s GCSE results.

In a remarkable feat, the borough came 10th out of 150 local authorities for the new Average Progress 8 measure and second for its Progress 8 score in mathematics.

Cabinet member for children and young people, Cllr Elaine Norman said: “I would like to congratulate all our students that took GCSEs this year and all the staff in our schools and elsewhere whose efforts make such fantastic results possible.”

The new measure rewards schools for pupils who match or exceed their expected rate of progress rather than ranking schools on the proportion of pupils who gain a C grade or higher in five GCSE subjects including English and maths.

“For a long while it has been no secret that Redbridge has fantastic schools and provides excellent education and opportunities for young people,” continued Cllr Norman.

Redbridge also ranked 16th in the number of children attaining five A* to C GCSEs including English and maths.

As performances nationally and in London declined, the figures in the borough rose from 63.4 per cent to 64.1pc.

“We continue to excel despite figures showing a national decline and we continue to provide our young people with a superb education despite the financial pressures we face from Central Government cuts,” added Cllr Norman.

“This is a mark of how hard we and our young people are working.”
