Woodford County High School has been named the best secondary state school in London.
According to Parent Power, The Sunday Times Schools Guide 2019, the secondary in High Road, Woodford Green, has jumped more than 20 places up the table compared to last year.
Although it was ranked 11th best school in the captial thanks to its progress it won the overall title.
Jo Pomeroy, headteacher said: “Bright girls have collaborated with skilled and committed colleagues to make light of challenging new syllabuses.
“This accolade is a just reward for their efforts, and it’s an honour to express on everyone’s behalf the pleasure we all feel in being so conspicuously appreciated.
“We were delighted with the results in the summer and clearly everybody here works hard to ensure it remains an outstanding school for the community it serves - It’s wonderful to see it accredited in a national newspaper.”
Leader of the council, Councillor Jas Athwal said Woodford County High is a “wonderful school” which he has visited many times.
“It is an amazing achievement and the school’s teachers work really hard and the girls work incredibly hard,” he said.
“I have been to the school a number of times an I can see the ethos and quite frankly I am not surprised by the result.”
A Parent Power spokesman said their database of high achieving schools is widely acknowledged as the most authoritative survey of the country’s best schools.
“Ranked 11th in greater London, the school (Woodford County High) has jumped 23 places in the last year to be ranked 26th nationally,” he said.
“Its all-round improvement this year includes 79.4per cent of exams at A-level attaining A* to B grades compared to 76per cent in 2017, and 80.8per cent achieving A*/A grades at GCSE up 7.8 percentage points on last year.
“The rankings in the secondary school league tables are determined by the percentage of examination entries gaining A* to B grades at A-level this summer and the percentage of entries returning A*, A, 9, 8 and 7 grades at GCSE.
“They are published several weeks ahead of the official government tables for secondary school performance.”
The 26th edition of Parent Power identifies the 2,000 highest-achieving schools in the UK and a fully searchable national database by school name, local authority, town and postcode, together with regional rankings are available to Times and Sunday Times subscribers on its website.
