The Summer Reading Challenge 2012 proved to be Redbridge’s most successful year to date with a three per cent rise in children receiving medals and certificates.

Mayor Cllr Muhammed Javed and deputy mayor Cllr Elaine Norman attended the final day along with 200 of the 1,976 medal winners last week at Redbridge Central Library, Clements Road, Ilford. The children were dressed as princes and princesses to mark this year’s royal theme.

The annual event hopes to encourage young readers to discover the joy of reading. The 2012 programme formed part of the London 2012 Festival, the finale of the Cultural Olympiad.

Gearies Infant School, Waremead Road, Gants Hill repeated their success of last year to receive the Nora Dinmore Trophy for the highest proportion (25 per cent) of children completing the challenge in the borough.
