A group of 16 pupils, some as young as four years old, were accompanied by members of the council’s recycling team and a park ranger as they went about picking up litter and tidying the shrubbery in Valentines Park in time for the Queen’s 90th birthday in June.

Samira Jahangir, from the council’s Children’s Services and Schools department, said: “The school is taking part in this project to set an example to peers that they take pride in the environment in which we live, work and play.”

The council will present all the participants with a “keep Britain tidy” certificate at an assembly at the school in the near future.
