More than 200 balloons were released by children in Barkingside on Friday carrying hopes, wishes and messages.
Pupils at John Bramston Primary School, in Newcastle Avenue, let the balloons go in a riot of colour in the hope they could reach France or even further abroad.
Interim deputy head Alison Edgcombe said teacher Miriam Gould came up with the idea for childen and teachers to write their targets and hopes for the year on tags attached to the balloons.
There were also messages to anyone who may find them with the school’s address so they can write back.
Miss Edgcombe added: “We have done it on a much smaller scale before and had replies from Normandy and other places across the channel.
“It’s about aiming high and reaching for the stars.”
