You can catch them to school, you can sing about them, and now pupils at Cranbrook primary can cook on them.

The food cooking bus opened its doors to 14 children from the Ilford school in The Drive to provide a cooking demonstration and taster class last week.

The charity, Focus on Food, came up with idea for a portable kitchen to champion cooking as an essential ingredient for a healthy, happy and fit life.

Operational manager for the scheme, Lynda Townend, said: “The children made filo parcels and pea patties.

“It was really adventurous of them to try it as it was bright green, but they loved it.”

After preparing, cooking and eating the food, the children were able to take samples home with them.

Lynda added: “The parents were very impressed with the work and the children really enjoyed the experience.”

As well as feeding hungry minds, teachers in Redbridge will be trained in how to deliver curriculum appropriate lessons in the kitchen-cum-classroom.

The wheels on the bus will be stopping at Mayespark Primary School in Goodmayes Lane, Ilford, later in the week, and the organisation are planning to run after school clubs for primary school children in Redbridge when the new term starts in September.
