A party was held to celebrate 50 years of Jamaican Independence with traditional food, dancing and drama.

Residents gathered at Vine Church Hall, Holstock Road, Ilford on Sunday to mark the special anniversary which was the same day 100 metre runner Usain Bolt won the Olympic gold medal for the country.

There were special themed activities throughout the afternoon including a Jamaican quiz, traditional dishes such as jerk chicken and swordfish, a pledge to the country and a discussion on its history.

Organiser Donna Terrelonge said: “The day went very well and we had some great entertainment from the New Testament Ilford Choir and youth department at the church, who had people crying with laughter.

“It is important to mark occasions like this and join in with the community and have some fun. We had people of all ages getting involved with the singing and dancing.”
