The coach of the England women’s national football team, Hope Powell, took time out from her busy schedule to meet Ilford students, and encourage them to strive for their dreams.

Pupils at the Issac Newton Academy, Cricklefield Place, Ilford, met with Hope on Wednesday of last week to find out what it was like growing up playing football and how she became the team coach.

PE teacher, Leanne Abbott-Jones, said: “Hope spoke to all of the students about the challenges she faced as a young female, with a dream of playing football at the very top level. There were some very important messages delivered, demonstrating that with perseverance and commitment, you can achieve the goals that you set yourself in life.”

With 66 caps for England and 35 goals scored for the national side, Hope has had an extremely successful playing career.

Mrs Abbott-Jones added: “She spoke with real passion and a strong belief that she has changed many attitudes towards girls’ participation in the sport, and paved the way for other female coaches to get involved in football.”
