Hard working 11-year-olds have helped the borough achieve its best ever Key Stage 2 results - putting Redbridge joint fourth in the country.

Provisional figures from Redbridge Council have confirmed 85 per cent of pupils achieved Level 4 or above in reading, writing and maths.

The result ties the borough for fourth with Greenwich, Camden and Westminster and puts it significantly above the national average.

Nationwide, 79pc of pupils achieved Level 4s or above, a jump from 75pc in 2013.

Cabinet member for children and young people Cllr Elaine Norman said: “These results are exceptional and have really raised the bar for Redbridge.

“We have had an impressive track record with Key Stage 2 results in the past and are usually above the national average, but to come fourth, moving from 41st last year, is an incredible achievement.

Level 4 is the benchmark all 11-year-olds are supposed to achieve. Last year, 78pc of Redbridge pupils made the grade.

This year, the number of students achieving Level 5 or above also rose to 31pc, placing the borough fifth nationwide.

Cllr Norman added: “[The results] are a testament to the hard work of school staff and of their pupils.

“This also places our children in an excellent position to make the best of the opportunities that await them in secondary schools in September.”

In the individual categories of maths and grammar, punctuation and spelling, pupils also scored above the national average, Redbridge Council said.

GCSE results, which came out in August, showed a marginal fall in performance across the borough, with 69.5pc of students getting five A*-Cs including English and maths.
