A primary school hosted its first official event to celebrate the five day festival of Diwali, which included a mountain of sweets.

Pupils at Avanti Court Primary School, Carlton Drive, Barkingside performed a play depicting the story of Rama and Sita as well as singing songs about the celebration of light on Monday to staff and parents.

The evening’s entertainment included live Kirtan music and dance performances by the Sanskriti Dance Group.

Mayor Muhammad Jawad attended the event, which culminated in the sharing out of Indian savouries and a firework display.

Year one pupils helped to create a hill made out of Indian sweetmeats and desserts, signifying the divine Govardhan Hill.

Headteacher James Biddulph said: “All staff and pupils came dressed in cultural clothing and there was a sense of excitement because it is not only our first event but because all members of our community have come together to support us.”
