Pupils at Mayfield School have reason to celebrate after 86 per cent achieved a university place with their A-level grades.

The school, in Pedley Road, Goodmayes, also announced that 14pc of students secured places on prestigious apprenticeship programmes.

Headteacher Andy Rehling said: “Overall, we are delighted with our results and very pleased that students’ and their teachers’ hard work has paid off in securing them their places at university or in apprenticeships.

More than a quarter of A-level and BTEC grades were A* or A, and almost 50pc were A* to B.

Mr Rehling continued: “I would like to pay tribute to staff who have worked with students to achieve these results despite facing a raft of new specifications and a reformed examination system.

“Particularly pleasing results were achieved in English literature, mathematics, social sciences and geography.”

Standout performances included Jaskirpal Dhuphar, who gained an A* and three As. He will go on to read maths at UCL.

Andrea Gruia received two A*, one A and a B and will study law at the LSE.

Ravi Sumble, who obtained three A grades in biology, maths and physics, will go to UCL to read physics.

Other students had apprenticeships to look forward to.

Abbas Khabbaz, whose results were two As and a B, will soon be working in accounts and finance at Ernst & Young.

Allison Greenwood, deputy headteacher, added: “We are particularly proud that 70pc of students who took Level 3 BTEC vocational programmes achieved a Distinction*, or Distinction, equivalent to A* or A at A-level and have now secured places at some of the country’s top universities.”
